BRIEF HISTORY OF SAINT ANTHONY Although there is not much certain information about Saint Anthony's date of birth, it has traditionally been established as August 15, 1195. Saint Anthony died on June 13, 1231 in Padua, which helped him become widely known in the Catholic world as Saint Anthony of Padua. Saint Anthony, Doctor of the Church, was initially an Augustinian friar at the Convent of São Vicente de Fora in Lisbon, before moving to Coimbra to the Convent of Santa Cruz where he deepened his religious and ecclesiastical studies.

Saint Anthony became a Franciscan and subsequently began preaching on numerous journeys throughout Portugal, Spain, France, and Italy. An invitation from Saint Francis of Assisi led Saint Anthony to be part of the foundation of the Order of Assisi and the beginning of its spread across Europe. Saint Anthony later spent some time in Bologna before being transferred to Padua where he died. During his life, he taught at several French and Italian universities, becoming one of the most respected figures in the Catholic Church and one of the first Doctors of the Church. His fame was great both as a theologian and intellectual and as an orator and miracle worker, and his fame and sanctity led to his canonization shortly after his death. His great veneration, respect, and devotion elevate him to one of the great saints of the Church.
