", "about": "About Dr. Sousa Martins: On March 7, 1843, José Tomás de Sousa Martins was born in Alhandra in a rustic riverside house. The son of a carpenter, Caetano Martins, and a domestic worker, D. Maria das Dores de Sousa Martins, Dr. Sousa Martins' early years were marked by hardship and difficulties. Young José Tomas lived in poverty which worsened after his father's death when he was seven years old. His mother, Maria das Dores, struggled to raise three children alone. Despite these challenges, the child completed his primary education in Alhandra. At twelve, following his mother’s advice, he moved to Lisbon where his uncle Lazaro Joaquim de Sousa Pereira had a pharmacy near the Bica elevator on Rua de São Paulo. While assisting his uncle at the pharmacy, he continued his studies at the Liceu Nacional de Lisboa, followed by the Escola Médico-Cirúrgica de Lisboa where he earned his Pharmacy degree (at 21) and his Medicine degree (at 23). Dr. Sousa Martins' career is filled with honorary titles and appointments to academic, civic, scientific, and research positions both nationally and internationally. His reputation reflects his public service, particularly at the Hospital de São José, where his philanthropic work for the poor and needy and his provision of free medical care were most notable. In medicine and teaching, he emphasized the psychological component and the human relationship in medical practice. His relentless fight against tuberculosis involved research, study, and tireless advocacy for ideal treatment conditions, especially in the Serra da Estrela region. This fight exposed him to the disease, as he worked daily with terminal patients. Perhaps due to this extreme exposure, he contracted tuberculosis. With the worsening of his condition and a heart injury, Dr. Sousa Martins passed away on August 18, 1897; some say he died from the disease, others believe it was suicide by morphine injection, to avoid the suffering he knew so well. An indefatigable researcher, respected scientist, and esteemed doctor, Dr. Sousa Martins is a symbol of admiration across all social strata in Portuguese society. His name is synonymous with fraternal love, friendship, mercy, and assistance to the poor, the abandoned, and the needy; it's no surprise that he is honored with devotion at his tomb in Alhandra, his statue in Campo Santana in Lisbon, or at the former sanatorium in Guarda. Monuments erected in his honor continue to receive daily visits from followers who, in faith of his spirit, await healing or relief from their ailments or express gratitude for fulfilled healing requests." } ```
