What is Namastê:

Namastê is a traditional greeting from South Asia that translates to “I salute you” in English. This term is primarily used in India and Nepal by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists. In Indian and Nepalese cultures, the word is said at the beginning of a communication, often accompanied by a gesture of folded hands, without the need for spoken words.

The most formal form of namastê is known as namaskar or namaskaara. However, all forms carry a meaning of utmost respect.

Etymologically, namastê originates from Sanskrit and literally means “I bow to you,” representing the most dignified form of greeting one human being to another.

In a broader sense, namastê signifies “the God in my heart salutes the God in your heart.”

The gesture expresses profound respect and acknowledges that all individuals share the same essence, energy, and universe, thus having a very powerful pacifying effect.

Namastê is also widely used in yoga, where it is said to the instructor to show that the practitioner is a servant.

As a greeting, namastê can be expressed with hands clasped in front of the chest and a slight bow to indicate deep respect. It can also be placed in front of the forehead, and in cases of reverence to a deity or saint, the hand is placed completely above the head.

In some parts of India (for example, the Punjabi-speaking region), namastê is used not only for greeting Hindus but for everyone.
