Himalayan black salt, also called Kala Namak, is very common in South Asia. It is a type of rock salt with a very intense sulfuric smell. This salt is not marine, as each stone is collected from a salt mine in the Himalayas. Its composition is sodium chloride with some impurities of sodium sulfate that give it a salty taste, iron that gives it its pomegranate/purple color, and some sulfur residues that give it a very distinctive smell and flavor.
