Saint Expeditus – 24cm

Brief History of Saint Expeditus There is not much information about Saint Expeditus. He was likely a Christian martyr in the 4th century in Melitene, Armenia. A popular legend describes him as a Roman military commander of the 12th Roman Legion, known as the “Fulminata,” stationed in Melitene. This legion was responsible for protecting the empire from eastern barbarian invasions with a total force of around 6,800 soldiers. Being Christian, along with most of his subordinates who were also from Armenia, he was condemned during Diocletian's persecutions on April 19, 303, and was martyred and beheaded for refusing to worship pagan gods. Another famous legend concerns his conversion to Christianity. Faced with the temptation of a demon in the form of a crow that cried “cras! cras!” (Latin for “tomorrow”), Saint Expeditus stepped on the creature saying “hodie!” (meaning “today”), signifying his readiness and willingness to convert immediately. In this sense, Saint Expeditus is now considered the patron of urgent causes.
