Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires on December 17, 1936, Pope Francis is the first pope from the Americas and the first Jesuit pope. He was elected on March 13, 2013, following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. Upon his election, the new pontiff chose the name Francis, in reference to Saint Francis of Assisi, highlighting his “simplicity and dedication to the poor.”
