BRIEF HISTORY OF SAINT CYPRIAN

Saint Cyprian converted to Christianity at the age of thirty-five. In 249, due to his great fervor for God, he was chosen as bishop of his city and also worked on organizing the Church in Africa. Saint Cyprian left behind several writings that form a valuable collection of documents on faith and worship, contributing to the creation of Christian Latin. Born into a wealthy family in Carthage, a Roman capital in North Africa, Cyprian was already a renowned lawyer and master of rhetoric before his conversion to Christianity. His conversion was a great surprise and scandal at the time. Shortly after his ordination, he was consecrated bishop during a very difficult period for the African Church. Two persecutions against Christians occurred then: those of Decius and Valerian. Despite the persecution by Emperor Decius in 249, Cyprian chose to continue serving the Church. In 258, the holy bishop was denounced, arrested, and sentenced.
