ABOUT THE JAPAMALA

The Japa mala or mala (Sanskrit: माला; mālā, meaning garland) is a series of beads, typically composed of 108 beads, used by Hindus and Buddhists to count while reciting, singing, or mentally repeating mantras, similar to rosaries. This practice is called Japa in Sanskrit.

The number has particular significance both physically and spiritually for Hinduism and Buddhism. Sometimes, some malas include four markers called chaturmaharaja, different and often symbolic beads. The 109th bead is called sumeru (central mountain of Buddhist cosmology), bindu (point of creation), stupa (dome that houses relics), or guru bead (master). This bead is never counted but indicates the beginning or end of a count.
