rosewood japamala bracelet

\n

The rosewood japamala bracelet is composed of 27 beads (+ 1 sumeru) made from rosewood, which when multiplied by 4 makes the symbolic total of 108 beads, a standard in japamalas. Rosewood (pau-rosa) is widely used in japamalas due to its high regard in India for its durability and strength.

ABOUT THE JAPAMALA

\n

The japamala or mala (Sanskrit: माला; mālā, meaning garland) is a series of beads, typically consisting of 108 beads, used by Hindus and Buddhists to keep count while reciting, chanting, or mentally repeating mantras, similar to rosaries. This practice is known as japá in Sanskrit.

\n

The number holds particular significance both physically and spiritually for Hinduism and Buddhism. Sometimes, some malas include 4 markers called chaturmaharaja, which are different and often symbolic beads. The 109th bead is called sumeru (central mountain in Buddhist cosmology), bindu (point of creation), stupa (dome that houses relics), or guru bead (master). This bead is never counted but indicates the beginning or end of a count.
