ABOUT THE JAPAMALA

The japamala or mala (Sanskrit: माला; mālā, meaning garland) is a series of beads, typically consisting of 108 beads, used by Hindus and Buddhists to count while reciting, chanting, or mentally repeating mantras, similar to rosaries.

This practice is called Japa in Sanskrit. The number has special significance both physically and spiritually for Hinduism and Buddhism.

Sometimes, some malas include 4 markers called chaturmaharaja, which are different and often symbolic beads.

The 109th bead is called sumeru (central mountain in Buddhist cosmology), bindu (point of creation), stupa (dome that houses relics), or guru bead (master). This bead is never counted but indicates the beginning or end of a count.
